Seit 2004 beschäftigt sich das Projekt mit der Sichtbarmachung des kollektiven Bildgedächtnisses des Internets. „Onewordmovie“ ist eine interaktive Online-Arbeit, die zu Suchbegriffen des Benutzers strukturelle Animationsfilme generiert. In der Installation „Dreammachine“ wurden online abgelegte Traumtagebücher zu Bildströmen umgewandelt.
Parallel dazu sind unter dem Namen Subreals statische Bilder entstanden, die sich aus dem Online-Bildpool generieren. Ein Programm erzeugt neue Bilder durch algorithmisch definierte Schritte aus zugänglichen Netzbildern. Die Bilder werden nach bestimmten Kriterien gefunden und heruntergeladen, dann durch Übereinanderschichtung und Dehnung in ein einheitliches Format gebracht. Jedes Bild hat einen Index mit Suchwort, Erstellungsdatum und URLs der verwendeten Bilder. Dieser Index dokumentiert die Herkunft der Bildschichten. Der Titel des Bildes besteht aus Suchwort und Erstellungsdatum.
Da Computerprogramme Bilder nur begrenzt erkennen können, erfolgt die Bildersuche über Bildlegenden und Verschlagwortung. Sprachliche Missverständnisse und semantische Doppeldeutigkeiten werden produktiv genutzt. Die Bildtitelwahl untersucht, welche Bilder Menschen im Netz sehen und zeigen wollen. Bildrelevanzen lassen sich in vier Hauptkategorien einteilen: Kunst (Malerei, Zeichnung, Fotografie), gesellschaftlich bedeutsame Bilder (Presse, Wissenschaft, Werbung), private Bilder (Hobby, Familienbilder, Selfies ect) und Pornografie.
Die Rolle des Künstlers im künstlerischen Prozess beschränkt sich auf die Steuerung von Input und Output. Dazwischen liegt ein automatisierter Prozess, auf den kein künstlerischer oder gestalterischer Einfluss genommen wird. Erst die Reflexion der Ästhetik des verschmolzenen Bildes und deren Inhalte erhält durch die Auswahl wieder eine persönliche künstlerische Autorenschaft.

Since 2004, the project has explored ways of making the collective visual memory of the internet visible. Onewordmovie is an interactive online work that generates structural animated films from user-provided search terms. In the installation Dreammachine, dream diaries published online were transformed into visual streams.
Parallel to these, under the title Subreals, static images have emerged that are generated from online image pools. A custom program creates new images through algorithmically defined steps using accessible web images. These images are found and downloaded based on specific criteria, then layered and stretched into a uniform format. Each image includes an index listing the search term, creation date, and URLs of the source images. This index documents the origin of the image layers. The title of each image consists of the search term and the creation date.
Because computer programs have limited ability to understand images, the search relies on captions and keyword tagging. Linguistic ambiguities and semantic double meanings are used productively. The choice of image titles explores which kinds of images people wish to see and share online. Image relevance tends to fall into four main categories:
– Art (painting, drawing, photography)
– Socially significant imagery (press, science, advertising)
– Private images (hobbies, family pictures, selfies, etc.)
– Pornography
The role of the artist in the creative process is limited to controlling input and output. Between these two points lies an automated process over which there is no artistic or design intervention. Only through the aesthetic reflection on the merged images and their content — and through the act of selection — does a personal artistic authorship re-emerge.
